#Jacobs student Sebastian Blümmert is the recipient of the inaugural #Krupp College Award!

The 21-year-old German has been chosen by the Krupp College Award Committee for his excellent academic performance and exceptional College and University commitment. Thanks to the generosity of the Jacobs University Board of Governors Sebastian Blümmert will receive 5000 Euros. From now on the new award is presented annually to one 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate or graduate student residing at Krupp College.

Jacobs researchers develop #logistics #robots who think ahead

Jacobs University participates in the European Integrated Project RobLog (Cognitive Robot for Automation of Logistic Processes) on robotics development for logistics processes. Funded for a four-years-period with a total budget of 7,86 million Euros by the European Union, five European research teams and two companies join forces for the research project on cognitive systems and robotics. The Jacobs scientists under the lead of professor Andreas Birk receives 1,42 million Euros of the project money to contribute the robots' 3D perception in challenging scenarios. The project starts on February 1, 2011.

Welcome guests students from #Lafayette College, #Rice University and University of #Cagliari!

Jacobs University welcomes a group of 28 new guest students from the United States and Italy, who arrived on January 25th and will join the campus community for the upcoming spring semester. The visit is based on the well-established cooperation with Lafayette College, a university with excellent undergraduate teaching located in Pennsylvania. The 26 Lafayette students, who are accompanied by their professor Bill Hornfeck and his wife Shirley, will be staying until June 1st. In addition, an Erasmus student from the University of Cagliari (Italy) will be joining the Lafayette group, as well as an exchange student from Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Hilke Brockmann and Jan Delhey, Jacobs Professors of Sociology and members of Jacobs University’s Happiness Research Group, have organized an experts' workshop themed „Is more always better?“ taking place at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (HWK - Institute for Advanced Study) in Delmenhorst from January 13 to 15, 2011. Sponsored by Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the interdisciplinary forum aims at exploring the paradigm of maximization from the perspective of human happiness.

The mystery of black #tea is unraveled - thanks to #Jacobs Professor Nikolai Kuhnert!

“Despite its nutritional and economical importance as well as its long cultural history, the chemical composition of black tea for the most part has remained unresolved until today, if not downright mysterious,” says Nikolai Kuhnert, Professor of Chemistry at Jacobs University. Now, by adapting an ultra high resolution mass spectrometry method originally developed for petrol research, a German-British research team headed by Kuhnert for the first time was able to provide evidence for the presence of up to 10,000 different compounds in the thearubigin fraction of black tea; molecular formulas were assigned to about 1,500 of them.

Make a wish come true by joining #B-a-Link's X-Mas present drive

The Christmas present drive “Make a wish” is still on until December 15th. Five Christmas trees on campus - one in each college and one at Reimar-Lüst-Hall’s coffee corner - are draped with wish lists of children from disadvantaged families. Every Jacobs community member has the chance to make a kid very happy by picking a wish list, getting one of the presents listed and bringing it to the Porters, MA 329, MC 220 or MC 101 until Wednesday.
